Upgrades And Updates To Consider When Replacing Your Roof

Home & Garden Blog

Generally, when you have a roof replaced, the roofer comes and tears off your old roof, and then they put a new one in its place. This generally satisfies your home's need for a new roof. But if you're getting a new roof already, there are some things you may want to have your roofer do at the same time. Here are some upgrades and updates that can often be made alongside your roof replacement.

Adding a Ridge Vent

Ventilation is important for roof systems. If an attic space is not well ventilated, heat will end up passing directly through your shingles or other roof material. This leads to premature damage to the roof material, especially if you live in an area where snow and ice are common. (Heat passing through the roof melts ice, which can later re-freeze and lift shingles from the roof surface.) A ridge vent is a long vent that stretches along the length of your roof's ridge, providing ventilation to the whole space. While your current roof probably does have some sort of vents, adding a ridge vent to the system can improve ventilation and help protect your new roof.

Adding Solar Shingles

Have you been looking for ways to reduce energy use or make your home more sustainable? You may want to have your roofing company add some solar shingles to your new roof setup. These shingles look very similar to normal shingles, but each one contains a solar cell that collects solar energy and converts it to electricity for your home to use. You can have these shingles placed on the parts of your roof that receive the most sunlight, thereby reducing your electricity bills for many years to come.

Seamless Gutters

Most roofing companies install gutters along with roofs. And the purpose of gutters is to protect the roof by collecting any water that falls on it. So, during your next roof replacement, you may want to ask your roofer to add some seamless gutters. These gutters, as the name suggests, are made from one continuous piece of metal. As such, they are less likely to trap material, which will keep them from becoming clogged. Having seamless gutters installed will keep you from having to clean your gutters as often going forward.

If you're already having your roof replaced, you may want to have a few updates made at the same time. Talk to a residential roofer about the options above.
