Want A Cozy Home? 3 Tips For Making Your House Feel More Like Home

Home & Garden Blog

If your home feels cold or if it is sparsely furnished and lacking in personality, you're probably looking for some easy ways to make your house feel more cozy and more like home. Before you go out and spend a lot of money purchasing furniture and large statement pieces for your house, try working with what you've got. By adding some inexpensive accessories, such as throw pillows, drapes, lighting and a few pieces of art, you can totally transform your living space without having to purchase a single piece of furniture. Following are three easy and inexpensive tips for making your house feel more like home.

Textiles and Fabrics

The best way to make your rooms appear soft and cozy while adding warmth and color is to incorporate textiles and fabrics into your decor. Area rugs, drapes and throw pillows are just a few things to consider. When shopping for fabrics, don't stick to matching fabrics. You can choose all sorts of patterns and textures as long as they share some similar colors. Also, when shopping for drapes, go for long, wide drapes. If you take your drapes from floor to ceiling, you will achieve maximum coziness and comfort.

Lighting and Color

Bright, sterile lighting may help you see better, but it also makes your rooms feel sterile and uninviting. To capture the right mood, take the lights down a notch. If you rely on your ceiling light for all your illumination, go out and purchase some table lamps and floor lamps. Use shaded lamps and bulbs that let off soft and/or yellow light to achieve the coziest effect.

If your walls are white or off-white, deepen them to a light tan or neutral beige. If you feel brave enough, you can incorporate color on your walls as well.

Art and Accessories

Rely on art and accessories to personalize your home. If you can only afford a few pieces, focus on purchasing your large pieces first rather than trying to purchase a few small, expensive items. Choose grand, statement pieces, such as a large painting or sculpture, and spend the bulk of your budget on them. Finish off your decor with small, intimate and inexpensive items that suit your personality and style and tie the statement piece in with the room.

There are numerous ways you can turn your house into a home. If you select the right fabrics, lighting, color, art and accessories, you will feel right at home in no time at all. For more design ideas, contact a company like House Of Drapery.
