Basic Troubleshooting Of Common Air Conditioner Problems

Blog

Many air conditioner problems require the aid of a skilled HVAC technician to solve. However, basic troubleshooting can sometimes solve your problems and get your air conditioner running again. Before calling a technician, here are some of the most common problems and the troubleshooting steps to take.

Air Conditioner Keeps Running

When the air conditioner runs for extended periods of time without turning off, it can not only have an impact on your energy bills, but also cause wear and tear to your unit. One of the first things you should do is check the thermostat to ensure that it is not set to "On" and that it is set to a high enough degree to prompt the unit to turn off.

Another issue could be the condenser. If it is clogged, the unit could be prompted to keep running. Check your outsider condenser for leaves, dirt, and other debris. You can use a vacuum cleaner and extension to help suck some of the debris out. Turn off the condenser using the switch located above it before cleaning it. Once the debris is removed, you can use a water hose to rinse it. Allow time for the condenser to dry before attempting to turn it back on again.

Air Conditioner Is Blowing Hot Air

One of the most common reasons that the air conditioner starts to blow hot air is that the condenser has frozen over. Check the condenser for signs of ice. If the condenser is covered with ice, you need to turn off the air conditioner and allow it to thaw. Use the switch above the condenser to turn it off. Unfortunately, when the condenser starts to ice over, it is a sign that you need more Freon added to it. A skilled HVAC technician must add in the Freon, so contact your pro as soon as possible to resolve the issue.

Sometimes, the lack of cool air is a sign that the air filter is clogged. If you have not checked or changed your air filter, now is the time to do it. If you have a filter that can be cleaned, rinse it with warm water and use a soft-bristled brush to remove the dirt from it. Allow the filter to completely dry before putting it back into the unit.

If your air conditioning unit continues to blow hot air or any other problems, contact your HVAC technician. He or she can diagnose the source of the problem and repair it.
